How to Strengthen the Father Daughter Relationship

How to Strengthen the Father-Daughter Relationship

Share with friends

Countless studies have shown that the relationship you have with your daughter will ultimately form the template she uses later in life for her own relationships. Since having a strong relationship with your daughter will develop her confidence and possibly even make her do better at all educational levels, striving to strengthen the father-daughter relationship early on can be one of the most important things you’ll do as a father.

Listen to her

In many cases, girls will talk more as they grow up than boys will, so make the time to listen to what she says. Not only will this give you an idea of what she likes and what she thinks is important in her life, but really hearing what she has to say can make her feel important.

If you find that it’s too difficult to devote the uninterrupted listening time your daughter needs at home, consider making it a habit to take her on drives or walks around the block so that the two of you can have quality alone time. You may also want to create a routine of spending time talking to her when you tuck her in each night.

Teach her things

Little girls love to learn new things and getting to be the helper on a project can be a confidence booster. While teaching your daughter to ride a bike or helping her learn to read are critical skills, don’t shy away from the activities that a father might typically do with his son. Although not all activities will be appropriate for younger children, you could teach your daughter how to:

  • Camp
  • Fish
  • Fix things around the house
  • Help with the yard
  • Work on the car.

Not only does this give the two of you more time to spend together, but you’ll also be teaching your daughter how to be more self-sufficient when she gets older. As a bonus, your daughter won’t get locked into the thinking that some activities and vocations are only for men, which may serve her well when she picks a career later in life.

Have fun together

Too often, the demands of a job can get in the way of just having fun with your family. While spending time with the family as a whole is crucial to maintaining a happy family dynamic, girls can benefit from a little extra time with their fathers. Setting up a regular date night with your daughter can be an easy way to make this happen. Possible activity ideas include:

  • Bowling
  • Having lunch or dinner out
  • Listening to music
  • Miniature golfing
  • Nature walks
  • Playing at the park
  • Seeing a movie
  • Visiting a library during story hour.

In some cases, you don’t even have to leave the house for your date. If you’ve got a daughter who loves playing video games, spend some quality time on the couch solving puzzles and defeating bad guys. The point is that you’re taking an interest in the thing she enjoys and having fun.
