You can prevent blindness. Some people are born with disorders of the eye that lead to blindness, but even if you have healthy sight today, it can get worse with age, so you need to know how to prevent blindness throughout your lifetime. Here are some ways to prevent blindness in you and your family.

Prevent Blindness in Your Kids

Make sure your children always protect their eyes when they’re outside. UV and other harmful rays of the sun can damage young eyes, so make sure they wear good quality sunglasses and shield their eyes from the sun whenever possible. A large-brimmed hat helps protect the eyes, too. Eating a healthy diet, including fruits and vegetables, is a good way to protect your body from many eye diseases, such as diabetes, which can lead to diabetic eye disease. Obesity is also linked to increased levels of glaucoma and macular degeneration, so eating healthy through your lifetime for good health is good eye protection, too.

Prevent Blindness in Adults

One of the best ways to increase your eye health is to quit smoking. Studies show that smokers show increased rates of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts, and all of those conditions can lead to blindness if they aren’t caught in time. Keeping your blood pressure under control is also a good way to maintain eye health. Regular exercise also leads to improved eye health, because it can help you maintain a healthy body weight, which is better for your eyes in several ways. Overweight people have a tendency to develop diabetes and other health conditions that can affect the eyes at some point in time.

Avoid Accidents

Eye accidents that lead to blindness are common, so you need to avoid eye injuries, as well. Sports eye injuries are widespread, so in competitive sports, children should wear safety glasses or goggles to protect their eyes. Don’t run or play with sharp objects, and don’t let children play with toys with sharp edges or are inherently injury-prone, like BB guns or knives. At work, always wear goggles or safety glasses if you have a hazardous job or work with chemicals, and make sure you know what kinds of hazards you could face at work, such as flying particles, falling tools, and other objects that could injure your eyes.

Remember, regular glasses don’t offer enough protection in most cases, so use protective goggles or glasses to prevent eye accidents and prevent blindness.
