Pool Table Moving

Pool table moving is a difficult task and if you need to move your pool table, you have two options: do it yourself or hire professionals. Doing it yourself requires time, heavy lifting, some help, and a few tools. Hiring professionals cost money, but it may be money well spent. Before you attempt to perform the task yourself, there are some things to consider.

Preliminary work

Before beginning the chore of moving a pool table, there is some prep work. You will need at least

• A measuring tape

• A four wheeled, flat-bed dolly load rated to 1,000 pounds

• Four very good, dedicated friends who do not mind lifting and moving heavy objects

• Padding for the dolly and protective coverings for the table

• A professional grade level

Moving from one room to another

If you are moving the table from one room to another on the same floor, measure all doorways and passageways through which the table and its dolly will pass. Make sure there is enough room to make any turns while the table is on the dolly. If there is plenty of room, you may be able to move the table in one piece. Pad the dolly and cover the table to prevent scratching. With your friends, turn it on its side onto the dolly and roll it to the new room, carefully navigating doors and passageways. With your friends, take it off the dolly, position it and level it.

Moving to a different building

If you are moving the table to a different building, to another floor, or if any of the doors or passageways are not wide enough, the table must be disassembled before moving it, and then reassembled after it reaches its new location. Allow a good four to five hours for this process, not including the time spent loading, unloading, and transporting the table. To do this you will need:

• Staple pullers

• Flat and Philips head screwdrivers

• Socket wrench

• Padding and protective covering for the table

• Professional grade level

• Friends

• Truck large enough to handle the disassembled pool table

Disassembling is far too complicated a process to detail here; plans on how to do it are available from the table’s manufacturer, or the seller where the table was purchased. Briefly, though, taking the table apart is a multi-person job and involves removing the pockets, rails, felt, bed (it will be in three parts), and legs. These parts are fastened with staples, screws, bolts, and glue (be sure to label all the components for reassembly). Once disassembled, load it on the truck and reverse the procedure at its new home, leveling it after completion.

Hiring professionals

Contracting with a professional pool table moving company may be the smarter way to go. Their fees are reasonable and they handle all aspects of the move. In addition, they are insured and are responsible for any damages. You won’t get snookered.
