A nurse recruiter has the unenviable job of filling positions for hospitals, clinics and private practices at a time when a nursing shortage has developed in the US. In 2008, the American Healthcare Association reported that there were an estimated 135,000 nursing vacancies in the country, a total that was expected to double the by the year 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. One of the reasons officials expect the shortage to continue is because of the high demand for nurses. An estimated 600,000 new nursing positions will be created in the 10-year period ending in 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The demand for nurses has created a number of niche markets that give nurse recruiters some flexibility in dealing with nurses looking for the best possible open position. Some of the different types of nursing jobs include:

  • Travel nursing. Because doctors and facilities throughout the country are looking for qualified nurses, it’s possible to shop for a job by geographic region as well as the specifics of the job itself. That means some employers may be willing to offer higher salaries and additional benefits for the right candidate. By working with a nurse recruiter, or speaking with several recruiters, an applicant maximizes the chances of finding the best available job. The difficult job market, combined with the fact that a nurse recruiter isn’t paid until the hospital, clinic or doctor actually hires the job applicant, provides additional motivation for the nurse recruiter to satisfy the job applicant, who may at the same time be working with other recruiters.
