New Lock Choices

Keyless locks are one of the most recent lock choices for homes. Part of the motivation is the ability of burglars to defeat traditional locks with bump keys, a key that can manipulate the pin tumbler lock to gain entry even without the key crafted specifically for that lock. Keyless locks, or digital locks, depend on various technologies to allow entry through the door.

  • Pushbutton locks. A code is programmed into the lock – often 6 digits – and when the correct digits are entered the lock opens. The system can be used with deadbolt or mortise locks and some pushbutton systems allow more than 1 code to be used to enter the home. There is programming available to make other combinations available only for short periods of time for people who visit or workers who are doing jobs in the house. Also, the combination can be reset and changed in a manner of minutes at the keypad.
  • Remote-control sensor locks. These are similar to the keyless entry system used for many cars. A based unit is synched with the lock so that a remote control signal that is sent from the base unit automatically unlocks the door. The base unit is normally a key-sized apparatus with a button.
  • Biometric locks. These convert a scanned fingerprint into data that then becomes the code that can unlock the door. Many units can accept 10 or more different fingerprints in memory to open up the lock. Additionally, fingerprints can be added and deleted easily to accommodate seasonal or occasional visitors. The sensor pad is usually on or above the door handle and scans the fingerprint before unlocking the door.

Benefits of New Lock Options

  • Get rid of keys. In addition to the popularity of bump keys to allow burglars to gain entrance into homes, some homeowners simply don’t do well with keys. They lose them frequently or fumble for minutes at the door searching for the key at the bottom of their purse. Keyless technology can make things as simply as a homeowner wants. They only have to remember the combination to the pushbutton lock or keep the remote-control unit with them at all times. If that ever proves troubling, than the biometric keyless lock may be the best choice. With biometric locks, the only thing a homeowner must remember is to bring their fingers with them.
  • Good choice for the mobility impaired. The remote-control keyless lock is great for someone injured or disabled who is using a wheelchair, crutches or other device to get around. One press of a button opens the lock without the need to locate and be able to physically manipulate a key in a lock.
  • Speed. Sometimes it helps to be able to get inside your home as quickly as possible. It could be something as innocent as howling thunderstorm or you or a family member may be concerned that someone is following them. Any of the keyless entry options allows for extremely quick entry. Just a few pushes of a button, the press of a single button for the remote-control unit or the swipe of a fingertip for the biometric system.
