Finding a Music DJ

Music at your party or celebration plays an important role in establishing the ambience. While live music is nice, it is not always practical. However finding a music DJ to handle the songs and tunes is an affordable option and offers a wider variety of choices than a band or other live musician can offer.

Choosing a DJ

Disc jockey has become an important occupation in the party industry, and finding the right one takes a little due diligence. With a little effort, and an interview or two, you will be able to find one who will be a great addition to your event.

Interviewing DJs

Interviewing DJs is like interviewing any other professional. You should ask for credentials (in this case it will be a portfolio of candidates) and references. You should also ask about the amount of equipment they have, if extra equipment will be needed, and how much space is needed, making sure the location can accommodate the needs.

Finally, ask about their rates and availability and any limitations they may have to their repertoire. Most important, do you like the candidate and feel comfortable with his or her personality and ability to entertain a group.

Creating a program

Once you have decided on a DJ, sit down with him or her, and set the program. When doing this, be very specific and make sure everything is in writing and have both parties sign the document. This gives both parties recourse in the event of a dispute. Include in this document

  • What time the DJ is expected to arrive and the time to start playing
  • The songs that will be played
  • The order of the songs being played
  • Any special songs, especially those that need to be played at certain times
  • The number of breaks the DJ can take, and the length of the breaks
  • How many guests the DJ may bring
  • What time the DJ is expected to stop
  • Determine if the DJ can play special requests
  • The fee for the DJs services, and if the DJ is allowed to accept gratuities or openly promote his or her services
  • Feeding the DJ

By knowing the beginning and ending times, and the number and length of breaks, you can plan to the minute the length of the DJs work. Since every song has a time stamp, you can configure the music played down to the minute.

Working DJs is a cooperative effort, and they are experienced professionals. Listening to their advice regarding the playlist will help the planning process go smoothly. With all that, finding a good music DJ for your party or celebration will go smoothly and make for a great evening.
