Mobile Home Insurance

Mobile home insurance coverage is very similar to coverage in a homeowner’s policy. Mobile home insurance also includes coverages specific to the situation of a mobile home owner. Some companies will give you the option of choosing a standard or upgraded policy with extra coverages and a wider array of potential covered hazards.

You may also have the option to insure your mobile home at agreed value (the amount on the declaration page of your insurance policy) or you may have the option of purchasing optional coverage that will replace the damaged property with new property at current prices. Usually this type of coverage will go up to 120% of the stated policy coverage on the declaration page.

Generally, the mobile home is not covered by mobile home insurance while in transit. That would need to be purchased separately.

Mobile Home Insurance Protection – Protects the home in case of fire, windstorm, falling objects, or other hazards that may cause property damage to the mobile home. Check to see if there are exclusions in the policy. Flood will not be covered in most cases; if you live in an area that floods, you should see if government flood insurance is available in your area.

Family Liability Protection – If you are found legally responsible for an incident or accident that causes property damage or injury to someone that does not live in your home, this coverage will pay for expenses such as: pain and suffering, property damage, lost wages, medical bills, and legal counsel for you as well as legal cost reimbursement if you are sued as a result of the incident.

Guest Medical Protection – Sometimes referred to as a courtesy coverage because it is extended to a guest that is hurt in your home, but does not require litigation to go into effect the way bodily injury coverage does. If a guest comes to your home and is hurt due to negligence or some other covered incident, guest medical protection will cover medical expenses to the policy coverage limit.

Loss of Use of the Mobile Home – If you must move out of your home temporarily due to damage caused by a covered loss, your loss-of-use coverage will pay the cost of alternate housing, such as a hotel, as well as other basic living expenses. Check with your insurance agent before use to find out what is considered "reasonable cost" in your region and keep in mind that the coverage pays for living expenses above what you would normally spend. Ask your agent how the mobile home insurance company determines what you normally spend.
