Common Kitchen Sink Plumbing Problems

For most homeowners, kitchen sink plumbing problems are relatively common. Unfortunately, they are some of the most frustrating issues to deal with, since the kitchen sink is one of the most widely used plumbing fixtures in the home. Therefore, if left unchecked, kitchen sink plumbing issues can become a major annoyance and expense for homeowners when the sink starts to gurgle, clog, or leak. While some kitchen sink problems can be relatively simple “do-it-yourself” projects, others may require the help of a licensed plumber.

Kitchen Sink Components

Regardless of the severity of the problem, it is important to know the basic components of your kitchen sink to better diagnose the issue at hand. The four main parts of most kitchen sinks are:

  • Kitchen faucet
  • Kitchen bowl
  • Drain basket
  • Garbage disposal

Most Common Problems

Some of the most common kitchen sink plumbing problems homeowners encounter are:

  • Leaky or clogged kitchen faucets
  • Clogged drains
  • Leaking drain baskets
  • Broken garbage disposals

Leaky or Clogged Kitchen Faucets

For leaky or clogged kitchen faucets, the first thing to check is the end of the faucet where the water comes out, called the aerator. Unscrew the aerator and see if there are any solid particles attached to it. If so, this is a good indication that there may be an obstruction in your faucet. Let water run without the aerator for awhile and put it back on. If the faucet still drips, the problem could be with the washer in the faucet. If you are not comfortable taking apart the faucet yourself, it is a good idea to contact a professional plumber for help.

Clogged Drains

A clogged drain is another common kitchen sink issue, especially for sinks that do not have a garbage disposal. Pieces of food can easily get stuck in the pipe below the sink and cause water to not drain properly. Before calling a plumber, you can try using a plunger or chemical drain cleaner to dislodge the obstruction. However, if this does not work, it is best to contact a plumber.

Leaking Drain Baskets

For leaking drain baskets, the best solution is to replace the drain basket. When picking out new parts, it is important to remember that the more expensive parts are usually made of more durable and higher-quality materials.

Broken Garbage Disposals

When it comes to broken garbage disposals, the best course of action is to try resetting the disposal by pushing a red button on the underside of the disposal. If the disposal still does not work, contact a licensed plumber, as he or she will be able to repair or replace the disposal for you.

Fixing most kitchen sink plumbing problems is relatively easy to do if you have the right tools and understanding of how each plumbing fixture works. However, trying to fix such issues on your own without the proper tools or experience can ultimately cause further damage to your kitchen sink, so never hesitate to call a plumber to help you sort things out.
