Did you know that your child may be eligible for free tutoring? Even better, many communities offer free tutoring services to all schoolchildren, anywhere from grammar school to high school, and sometimes even at the college level. Studies show that academically based programs that are offered outside of school can have a strong impact on student performance and the development of good work habits. Free tutoring programs are designed to build on what the child learned during the day in order to strengthen core concepts and skills, and help the child prepare for what lies ahead. Free tutoring is especially beneficial, as it removes the financial burden on parents, particularly for families who are struggling to make ends meet. Here are some of the places that free tutoring may be available in your community.

Low-Income Free Tutoring

For low-income and at-risk students, free tutoring (or SES, supplemental educational services) are offered as a provision of the No Child Left Behind Act. These services offer extra help in core academic subjects such as reading, writing, and mathematics, and are generally made available outside the regular school day. They are generally offered by external providers that have been approved by that particular state’s Department of Education. It’s also important to note that sometimes school districts will offer additional tutoring and homework clubs for all students, whether they qualify for the SES program or not.

Free Tutoring for the Military

Currently, there is a free tutoring program available for Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve members in the Army, Marines, Navy, or Air Force, as well as their dependents. Funded by the Department of Defense MWR Library Program and Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, students on any level can access free help in various subjects. This program is aimed to assist military families who move frequently or are dealing with a deployed parent, and is conveniently available online.

Other Free Tutoring Services

In many communities, free tutoring is offered by organizations as a form of community service. Many local libraries offer different kinds of tutoring programs, from one-on-one and group afterschool tutoring by local volunteers to free online services. Colleges often offer free services as well for local schoolchildren, often as part of their education program. Many communities also have literacy groups and programs that are available to help struggling students. Local youth programs through churches, community centers, and resource centers often provide homework help, college readiness, mentoring, and tutoring programs as well.
