What are the top six things each fitness center should have? When shopping for the perfect fitness center each member should be satisfied with their ultimate decision. While the center specifics will vary, there are six key conditions that each facility should meet:

  1. Every health club should have at least one certified personal trainer on staff that can perform fitness evaluations on new and existing members. New members should be screened for fitness levels and goals, and taught which equipment they can/should use and how to use them properly. Personal trainers should also assist members with assembling a preliminary workout plan and walk them through their routine before allowing them access to the equipment on their own. Clubs should also always have CPR/first aid certified staff members, in case of an injury, or more life threatening emergency situation.
  2. A friendly staff should be expected at a fitness center. As the consumer, staff should be pleasant, eager and able to solve any concerns you may have regarding the facility, the equipment, or your program. If visiting a fitness center and the staff does not make every effort to make you feel welcome, the facility may not be a good fit. This also applies to other members. If other members are of a similar age, seem friendly, and are eager to strike up a conversation the center may be a comfortable workout facility.
  3. The overall “health” of the fitness center should be of prime concern. When visiting health clubs explore and observe with eagle eyes. Are the machines wiped down regularly by both members and staff? Are showers and locker rooms regularly cleaned and maintained? Bacteria in gyms can cause major health problems, so diligence is very important. In the case of gym supplied towels, if skin or seasonal allergies exist, be sure to inquire about how towels are laundered.
  4. Your fitness center should have anything and everything you think you may want in a facility. With the number of general and specialty fitness centers around, there is one that will suit just about every individual’s needs. Be clear about your desires before shopping, and be sure not to settle for a facility that may fall short. If you want to swim, play tennis, or jog at a club, be sure a pool, court and track are on premises. One thing to inquire about, are the types of flooring used for different activities. Many newer clubs have shock absorbing floors designed to protect the skeletal system. Be sure your fitness center has not only what you need, but also what you want.
  5. Every gym should have reliable equipment available for its members. Cushions should all be free of cracks or tears, equipment should be free of rust, and in perfect working order, and equipment that breaks down should be repaired in a timely manner. When considering joining a fitness center, buyers should allow themselves time to wander around the facility to inspect equipment, and ask members about a facilities response time to broken equipment.
  6. There are a number of extended hour or twenty-four hour gyms available to help members meet their fitness needs within their schedule constraints. However, when very late or early morning workout schedules are needed, members should inquire about personal safety. Are doors manned, or automatically locked? Are members required to enter by swiping their membership cards? Is security on hand? Are premises monitored? Ask about what safety measures a facility has in place for both their interior and exterior.

Use the six top things every fitness center should have as a guide when shopping for your health club. Remember to have an idea of what you want before you begin, and take advantage of trial memberships to give the fitness center a whirl before you buy.
