A Ductless Mini Split for Your Older Home

While central air conditioning and heating are very common in newer homes, older homes are often not pre-fitted with this convenience. Installing such systems into older homes can often be impractical and extremely expensive. However, window units are also not always the ideal solution because they are often noisy, insecure, and inefficient. A ductless mini split, also known as a ductless, mini-split heat pump, is an excellent solution to the problem of having no central ventilation in an older home. A ductless mini split has two components: an outdoor compressor and condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. A ductless mini split offers several advantages, some of which are listed below:

  • Small size and flexibility for heating and cooling individual rooms
  • Easier to install than other non-central air conditioning and heating units
  • More energy efficient than central air conditioning and heating systems

Size and Flexibility

A ductless mini split is much smaller and more flexible when it comes to heating and cooling individual rooms. It often has up to four indoor air handling units, useful for four rooms or zones, connected to one outdoor unit. Each of these zones has its own thermostat and therefore only needs to be turned on when someone is home. This ultimately saves you energy and money since you don’t need to run all the zones at once.

Ease of Installation

In addition, a ductless mini split is easier to install than other air conditioning systems like window units. Connecting the indoor and outdoor units only requires a three-inch hole through a wall to install the conduit. Manufacturers usually offer many conduit sizes as well, which makes it possible to place the compressor in a more inconspicuous area. In most cases, the outdoor unit can be installed up to 50 feet away from the indoor evaporator, which adds to this convenience.

More Energy Efficient

Since a ductless mini split contains no air ducts, it avoids the energy losses common in central heating and cooling systems. Central systems typically consume about 30 percent of their energy just compensating for the energy losses that occur through the ducts, especially if the ducts are located in an non-air-conditioned place like the attic.

While a ductless mini split is not always the best answer to an air conditioning and heating problem, it does work very well for older homes that often do not integrally include central heating and cooling. A ductless mini split offers several distinct advantages over window units and even central heating and cooling systems that make it an ideal solution for non-air-conditioned homes.
