If you live in a small apartment and have a lot of stuff, you probably know the frustration associated with trying to cram your belongings into a very limited amount of space. Not only can it be extremely difficult to find enough room for your things, but trying to decorate a small apartment can be aggravating if you have both limited wall space and many things to hang on your walls. Fortunately, following a few guidelines can help you maximize your wall space without overcrowding your apartment with decorations, which can not only help you make the most out of your limited space, but can also help ensure your home always looks its best.

Measure Your Walls to Decorate a Small Apartment

One of the best ways to decorate a small apartment is to measure the amount of wall space you have in each room and try to choose decorations that take up no more than half of the space on each wall. You should also remember that not every wall needs copious numbers of decorations, since sometimes less is best. A general rule to follow to help ensure you do not over-decorate is that you should place no more than one large painting and no more than two small paintings or other decorations on each wall. In addition, you should try to use different sizes of decorations in each room. For example, if you have two vertical paintings on one wall in your bedroom, you should try to place a horizontal painting on another wall to add some variety.

Decorate a Small Apartment with Appropriately sized Furniture

Another way to ensure you decorate a small apartment well is to select appropriately sized furniture for the square-footage in your apartment. This may mean choosing a smaller couch or loveseat instead of a huge couch with a sectional if you have a small living room and selecting a smaller TV so everything fits in your living space well and proportionally. While this can be difficult if you love electronics and want a huge TV, surround system, and have multiple computers, you should take measures to maximize your space without making your apartment appear overcrowded.

If you need to decorate a small apartment, two guidelines you should follow are to measure all your walls and select appropriately sized furniture for the square footage in your apartment. It is important to keep in mind that overstuffing your apartment is never a good idea, so you should do everything you can to decorate your apartment nicely while leaving as much open space as possible.
