Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you need to skimp on your next vacation or skip it altogether. There are so many cheap travel options available these days; all it takes is some creativity and a little foresight to plan the perfect escape. By traveling smartly and keeping an eye out for deals, you can arrange a grand adventure for your family, all while keeping costs down. If you’re looking to plan an inexpensive vacation, here are some great cheap travel ideas to get you started.

  • Go camping. RV parks and regular campgrounds offer significantly lower rates than the average hotel. Many also feature additional facilities and amenities, such as showers and even pools. A camping trip can even be a vacation within itself, as there’s always plenty to do in the great outdoors in terms of hiking, biking, relaxing around a campfire, and so on. Or you might consider planning a few hotel days in between so you can see the city sights as well.
  • Avoid flying. Airline rates tend to be expensive, and that’s not even including all the baggage and other extraneous fees you may be required to pay. Traveling by car is usually cheaper, and you can even do some sightseeing along the way. Just be sure to check on gas prices before you plan your trip, to determine whether this is indeed the cheaper option. If you embark on a road trip, also be sure you get your car serviced ahead of time, which can result in significant savings in terms of both time and money.
  • Stay on a farm. This travel option is particularly popular in the Northeast, but farm stays are available all over and offer a unique cheap travel experience. Typically, room rates are cheaper than hotels and include breakfast and dinner, significantly cutting down on your food costs. Farm stays also allow you to participate in the workings of the farm, from feeding the chickens to milking the cow. And the bucolic scenery and relaxing surroundings can’t be beat.
  • Try the hostel experience. This is another great way to travel cheap and experience something unique in the meantime. Hostels are significantly cheaper than hotels, and many offer community kitchens where you can prepare your own meals. But what’s really enriching about a hostel stay is its social aspects and the people you get to meet from all walks of life. If you’d prefer to avoid a dorm-style stay, do your research, as many hostels offer private room options for a slightly higher fee.
  • Travel off-season. This is one of the surest ways to guarantee cheap travel. When you travel on weekdays and off-season, you have a much better chance of finding bargain hotel rates and ticket prices. Remember, while the beach in August will most likely be quite expensive, this time of year is considered off-season in Arizona and you can probably get a great rate on a resort hotel at this time.
  • Track your budget. Wherever you go on vacation, be sure develop a budget ahead of time and do your best to stick to that. Keep a careful eye on your receipts and track your spending as you go. Careful monitoring of where and how you spend your money will help keep your cheap travel plans on track.
