Best Lawn Grass for the Sacramento Area

Despite being in the northern part of the state, Sacramento’s position in the Central Valley means hot summers. On the bright side, it also means winters that are only moderately cool instead of freezing cold. That means that the best grasses for Sacramento lawns are actually warm season grasses. This is more like SoCal instead of the Bay Area, which does best with cool season grasses.

Low Watering Types of Grass Are Best

The recent droughts and low water levels of the last few years have made it even more important that the right warm season grasses are used on lawns. Cool season grasses that grow well in the northern half of the US, such as Kentucky bluegrass, require a lot more water than warm season grasses. Even watering these grasses as much as possible will still leave you with a brown lawn during the summer.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass has long been popular across the southern half of the US for its hardiness, drought resistance, and its thick dense turf. For a long time that’s where it stayed, but recent varieties have changed that. New varieties of Bermuda grass are more cold resistant so they can grow well in the temperate zone, which includes Sacramento.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia grass is extremely popular in dry regions like Sacramento because of its hardy drought resistance. Zoysia’s root systems go deep, which means they need very little water or irrigation. These same root systems will spread laterally more than vertically, so zoysia can get by with less mowing and maintenance. It also helps the lawn repair itself, so once its established you’ll have a thick, hardy turf.

St. Augustine Grass

The biggest advantage of St. Augustine grass is its wide range of tolerances. The grass is salt resistance, heat resistant, and can even grow well in the shade. It does require more water than zoysia, but it’s still drought resistant, and needs far less than cool season grasses. If properly cared for, the grass can be very resistant to pests and disease while giving you a dark green lawn with wide blades.

Buffalo Grass

Buffalo grass has recently become much more popular with Sacramento and California lawns. This US native grass gets its name from its origins on the Great Plains. Its most popular use is on low-maintenance lawns. The grass is hardy, needs very little water, and can still be green during the heat of summer.
