There’s no doubt about it. A professional landscape makeover is a wonderful way to boost curb appeal, add value to your home and improve its appearance. If you’re not quite ready for a comprehensive facelift but you’re definitely ready for a change, here are six simple ways to spruce up the landscape you have.

  1. Create a focal point
One of the most effective strategies is to identify a single, primary focal point and use it to visually anchor the rest of the landscape. Think big: Choose a large established tree and emphasize its importance by adding edging and a fresh layer of mulch. Accent the area with a bench or pair of brightly colored Adirondack chairs.
  2. Use concentrated color
Rather than scattering your efforts, enhance one or two select areas with concentrated splashes of color. Highlight your front door by planting several repeat blooming roses in containers or a nearby flowerbed. Plant a mass of bright, long-blooming flowers near your newly selected focal point to add another vibrant pop of color.
  3. Transform side yards
Side yards are often spotty and neglected. If that sounds familiar, eliminate these eyesores by filling the space with landscaping material. Use landscape fabric to block weeds and grass, then add a generous layer of pea gravel, crushed rock or mulch to create a more polished appearance. Install stepping stones at spaced intervals for a finishing touch that’s attractive and practical.
  4. Eliminate patchy lawns
If sections of your lawn are bald or patchy, eliminate the issue by adopting a new approach. If foot traffic is the primary problem, install a simple gravel walkway. If turf struggles because there’s too much shade, plant low-maintenance shade-loving groundcovers or convert the space into a shade garden.
  5. Include containers
Use large, colorful containers to instantly fill out sparse flower beds or add height, depth and dimension to existing plantings. For a super-fast fix, move an existing planted container off the porch or patio and into the landscape. Or select pre-planted containers at your local gardening center.
  6. Add mulch
Adding mulch is one of the quickest ways to spruce up existing flower beds and foundation plantings and freshen up your landscape. Cover bare soil with a layer 3 to 4 inches thick, which will block weeds and conserve moisture. Add a fresh layer to top dress existing mulched areas and create a pleasing, unified appearance.
