Amaka's International, owned and operated by a young, ambitious business woman, is one of my favorite salons. Dedra Hines, the owner, has created an atmosphere that is calm, peaceful and relaxing. My stylist, Jameka Webb, has done a fantastic job styling and coloring my natural hair. I consistently receive compliments on my color and inquiries about where I get my hair done and by whom. It's also conveniently located in Durham! They also offer other complementary services (Mani/pedis, etc). There are barbers as well. So, they can meet the needs of everyone in your family. lf you get a chance, check it out! You won't be disappointed!

I have been going to Amakas for almost 4 years now. I have never had a bad service and all the sylist are wonderful. Dedra is my regular stylist, but I don't hesitate to make an appointment with another one of her stylist if I can not get in with her. I love this salon!

This place is awesome! Jamaica is a wonderful stylist that really cares about my hair. She not only styles my hair, she also gives great hair care advice. The owner is also a very nice person. They make you feel at home and their service is worth every dime.

Stylist, Dedra gave me the best twist set I've ever had. Also explained to me how to maintain at home. I'll be going back for color and a silk press. I've seen her other clients results & can't wait to see mine!

My first visit to Amakas was back in October 2012. I can honestly say that I saw a difference in my hair within the first two visits. My stylist Brittney really knows her stuff; they ALL do. Their silk press is LOVE, they only offer services that helps grow strong healthy hair seriously and nothing less. 10 stars for me!

I had a massage at Amaka's in June. Forgive me, I can't remember the therapist's name but, she was absolutely wonderful! She was professional, responsive, and I could tell massage is something she sees as not just a job but as her joy.

If I could, I would give Amaka's International 10 stars. Oh well 10 stars, lol. The team of stylists & barbers makes your experience so enjoyable, with the great services you receive, you will return. By continuing to be a client, I am treated with the utmost respect, pampered & made sure that I am ok by all employees. This business is my favorite because other than being a client, you are treated as family whom I love dearly.

My daughter is here for the summer vsiting from GA and we were in need of a natural hair salon; my sister recommended Amaka's. I must say I was truly impressed with my daughter's hair. I was hesitant about letting someone new do my daughter's hair but we are both very pleased!! My daughter is looking forward to her next trip to see Quvais, her stylist at Amaka's again this coming Tuesday. I want to thank all the staff at Amaka's for making my daughter's experiences a pleasurable one.

I've had natural hair for over 12 years now. The silk press done at Amaka's (chemical free flat ironing) is AMAZING! My hair is always so light and, well, silky! I have never had my hair look this way from other places or even from doing it myself. The owner (Dedra) has mastered this technique and passed it on to her other employees. The prices are great, especially for the outcome. I have never had them try and press me to get any type of treatment that I didn't request. As a matter of fact, there is a sign that states that you can't add more services to your appointment so as to keep the stylist on schedule for all customers. I've never experienced the "up-sale" mentioned in the other review. This is now the only salon I allow to touch my hair. When I'm around and about in town I can actually look at people's hair and tell that they had the silk press from Amaka's! It's THAT distinctive! Go get it and you won't regret it!

In dealing with natural hair, it takes time and patience to give us clients the ultimate experience and outcome. I've been coming to this salon for years and the owner is very knowledgeable of natural and healthy hair. She makes sure her staff is very knowledgeable as well. Not all clients will be please as at times I've witnessed some who come in already having a bad day and would take their frustrations out on everyone, i've also witnessed clients who choose styles that aren't realistic for their length or hair type. Amaka's Stylist and staff work hard to please everyone who walks in the door. A year ago the owner had a vision of making the salon name a reality "international "...she wanted to be able to service all clients no matter the ethnicity. Companies such as GROUPON and Living Social have helped her to do so. Those were some of her toughest clients, some loved their experience and others complained about small things. The one thing I love about the owner is that she reads reviews and listens to client complaints and tries her best to fix it. I always have to remember myself that not all experiences from one time clients speak for the entire salon and it's mission. The owner, being a minority, a woman, and a small business owner and managing over 6 employees is doing awesome for someone who is also a wife and mother of two little ones.;) This Salon has been striving for over 6years and will continue to be there to service their clients and myself. Experience them for yourself;) I did! I will make sure I post this everywhere! I love this salon and spa!

Amaks staff was very professional! They were upbeat warm and inviting. My stylist recommended treatment for my hair and I was very pleased. Since my treatment and trim my hair has been looking healthy and straight since the day I left. Amakas provided excellent customer service and used quality products. Im happy that I found this salon and I planning onmaking it my salon of choice going forward. Try it, you like it!
