Tom Williamson is a thoughtful realist. He's also an attorney. Unlike many he has had an entire career in the Public Defender side of the legal system. For many attorneys the path to lucrative criminal law practice seems to involve the Public Defenders' Office for a few years, then the D.A.s' Office for a few years, then the ad in the yellow pages in which they can claim those years as implying their expertise in Court based on those years. (Laypersons rarely understand how few cases are argued in court. Indeed---there's an odd, inverse correlation between law school rankings and the ability to stand up and enjoy arguing in court.) Tom is a generous person who deserves the respect he's earned in Durango. He continues to offer his expertise. His generosity of heart makes us hope that he finds the pleasures of retirement at a young and vigorous age fulfilling. My lesser angel wishes I could interest him in a pro bono legal collective!
