- Veterinary OphthalmologyDr. Dunkle grew up in Denver, North Carolina. He and his three siblings enjoyed watersports and swimming on Lake Norman during their summers. Dylan’s love for animals began as a child when his first cat arrived at his house as a stray. Dr. Dunkle found great joy in caring for him and other rescue pets that came to live in the Dunkle home. His love and interest in veterinarian medicine grew with the rescue and adoption of two abandoned five pound German Shepherd puppies who ended up going away to college with him. Graduating with a bachelor’s in pre-professional biology from Montreat College, Dylan went on to veterinary school at North Carolina State University. Dr. Dunkle was one of the first members of NC State’s student chapter of the international association for animal hospice and palliative care (IMHPC) as well as being active in the student veterinary emergency and critical care society. Dr. Dunkle has a special interest in urgent care, ophthalmology, and medical oncology. When he’s not working, Dr. Dunkle enjoys reading, playing chess, and playing with his cat Luther.

- Parasites Treatment and ControlOur licensed veterinarians at East Lincoln Animal Hospital can test your pet for heartworms with just a small blood sample. The test works by detecting the presence of heartworm proteins. Results are obtained quickly and our doctors will determine whether more tests are needed and if treatment is necessary. Dogs need to be tested annually even when they are on heartworm prevention year-round to make sure that the preventive program is working. Also, if you miss a heartworm treatment, give it to your dog late, or if your dog spits out or vomits up the heartworm pill, your dog is at risk.

- Heart Disease TreatmentHeartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease affecting pets in the United States. Here in Denver, North Carolina, mosquitoes are a major factor in the spread of heartworms, biting infected animals and spreading the heartworm larvae when they move on and bite their next host. These larvae can grow to be foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of infected animals. Heartworms can cause heart failure, lung disease and damage to other organs. There are few, if any, early signs of heartworm disease in dogs and cats. It is a serious, progressive disease, but the earlier it is detected, the better the chances that your pet will recover.

- Periodontal Disease TreatmentDental care is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, especially since dental problems can cause disease, or be caused by, other health problems. Early detection and treatment are important because chronic infections of the teeth and gums can cause problems in other parts of the body. Bacteria enter the bloodstream from infected teeth and that can lead to infection in organs such as the kidney, liver, heart, and lungs.
