- Established in 1980, the U.S. Department of Education is the agency of the federal government that establishes policy, as well as administers and coordinates federal assistance for education. The U.S. Department of Education additionally maintains more than five program offices, including civil rights, postsecondary education, federal student aid, and vocational and adult education.
