20 years ago, I left school, Walked two houses up the street to Leo's house(Owner New England Custom Masonry) and began my apprenticeship under Leo Masson's wing. I was 18 years old. I worked for Leo on and off for three years, he hired and fired me 3 times. It says more good about Leo than it does about me. Back in those days it was Leo, Tom and and 24yr old Mark as the Masons. For labors he had Steve "The Fonz", big John, and me. He was not only my boss, but he was a friend and mentor to me.
As far as his knowledge of the trade, his skill and experience, his quality of craftsmanship...Leo Masson constantly excels, he is a Master Mason like his father.
To this man I owe my passion for masonry. 20 years later I'm a journeyman mason with my own jobs where I'm the boss. And I think back to all those times when Leo used to give me a ride home. Sometimes we'd drive by the first house he'd bought years ago. He'd say, " Yup, it wasn't much when I bought it, but I fixed it up, worked hard and in the end made a profit. Everybody should be able to have a piece of the pie if they are willing to work hard enough."
