- General Info
- Dr. George Woodbury, Jr. is a board-certified dermatologist who graduated from medical school at the University of Chicago in 1987. He then completed his internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis and fulfilled his three year dermatology residency from 1988 to 1991 at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He is an active member of the Memphis Medical Society, the Bluff City Medical Society, the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Medical Society, the Tennessee Medical Association, the Memphis Medical Society, the Memphis Dermatologic Society, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, and the American Society of Mohs Surgery. Dr. Woodbury is also a Clinical Instructor with the University of Tennessee Division of Dermatology. He holds clinical privileges at St. Francis Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, and he has been in the private practice of dermatology since 1991. Dr. Woodbury is in a group practice named Rheumatology and Dermatology Associates, P.C., with Cathy Chapman M.D. The practice includes a dedicated staff of medical assistants and managerial, administrative, and billing staff. Patients are evaluated in both the Poplar Avenue office, in East Memphis, as well the Cordova office, on Walnut Grove Road, in the suburban area of Memphis. The physicians have been in practice together since 1993. As a dermatologist, Dr. Woodbury specializes in disorders of the skin, hair, and nails. His practice includes care of the full range of skin problems, including evaluation of and treatment of skin growths, moles, and skin cancer, as well as all types of rashes, eczema, psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. He provides a type of skin testing called allergy patch testing to check for skin allergies such as preservatives or fragrance allergy. He offers office phototherapy (light treatment) including PUVA treatments for people with psoriasis and other skin conditions. He also provides surgical treatment of skin cancers and moles, including the use of what is called Mohs micrographic surgery, which is a way of processing skin cancer specimens right in the office to allow rapid evaluation of the margins of a skin cancer. Dr. Woodbury has a special interest in the use of computers in medicine, and he has developed his office’s own medical software to create a paperless environment. Patients often receive a written copy of their care instructions, and prescriptions often go to pharmacies from computer to computer. His other interests include preventative care, such as tobacco cessation strategies. He is also involved in advocacy in both dermatology and general medicine as an active member of what’s called the Dermatology Advocacy Network which is a national group of dermatologists that follow issues in medical politics as they relate to patient care. He also edits a grassroots quarterly health newsletter to look at issues relating to patient care.
