- Medical Weight LossNeither BodyFX® nor CoolSculpting® are alternatives or a substitute for weight loss. However, BodyFX® is ideal for stubborn fat areas, skin tightening, and cellulite in hard to target areas for slimming.
- Urinary IncontinenceOther areas that PRP may be helpful is for surgical healing. PRP has also been injected to help with stress urinary incontinence and dysorgasmia issues.
- GlaucomaFurthermore, patients that have undergone laser refractive surgery (e.g., Lasik, PRK) can have a worsened response to dry eyes. Some reconstructive eyelid procedures can address and improve these issues. If a patient has preoperative dry eyes, then they need to remain vigilant with the use of ocular lubricants (tear supplements, ointments) in the postoperative period. Patients who have had prior eye surgery (e.g., glaucoma) also sometime require customized surgeries to protect their ocular health and vision. Dr. Burroughs is a dry eye expert, and has advanced dry eye treatment experience. He is the first and only provider of new dry eye treatments with intense pulsed light in Southern Colorado.
- OphthalmologyIn the field. During his ophthalmology residency his plastic surgical skill, aptitude and artistry was recognized early, prompting his surgical professors to recommend him for further fellowship subspecialization. Even before his 2-year fellowship, he collaborated with facial plastic surgeons
- Laser Eye SurgeryEyelid ptosis is anatomically caused by a weakening of the eyelid levator muscle or disruption of the tendon connected to it. There are many causes for this condition, including: disease, injury, congenital birth defects, previous eye surgery/trauma, eyelid rubbing (e.g., allergies, habit), contact lens wear, and aging changes. Most causes of ptosis do not improve with time and can cause significant visual issues.
- CataractsIf you are planning on having eye surgery, it is optimal when medically appropriate (you can see well enough to function) to have eyelid surgery first. Very rarely, eyelid surgery can change one’s vision and cause the need for glasses or an adjustment to one’s glasses prescription. Critical refractive or eye surgery (e.g., cataract) measurements can be changed after eyelid surgery.
- Cataract SurgeryYes. It is optimal when medically appropriate (you can see well enough to function) to have eyelid surgery first. Very rarely, eyelid surgery can change one’s vision and cause the need for glasses or an adjustment to one’s glasses prescription. Usually by 6-8 weeks, the eyes are stable and no further refractive (eyeglass) changes occur. It is quite rare for major shifts to occur, but because both laser and cataract surgery depend upon very accurate and stable preoperative measurements, it is best if one is thinking of doing eye surgery and eyelid surgery to do the eyelid surgery first. If you have already had laser (e.g., Lasik) or cataract surgery performed, then generally no substantial visual changes will occur, but is a slight risk. Patients that have had prior laser surgery are at a higher risk for dry eyes, which can be exacerbated following eyelid surgery and needs to be carefully monitored during healing.
- Eye ExamEntropion is an eyelid disposition characterized by in-turning of the eyelids. This more often affects the lower eyelids, but some conditions can also involve the upper eyelids as well. This can be a challenging issue to address and requires expert understanding and surgical “familiarity” with eyelid tissue manipulation to achieve an effective and long-lasting cure. This most often is an age-related issue, but there are several serious eye diseases that can also be the cause, and require a careful eye exam and possible specialized tissue testing of the conjunctiva.
- Stress ManagementSurgical result durations vary because of genetic and anatomical factors. An eyelid lift or facelift provides years of a more youthful appearance, but for best results and duration you must choose to protect your investment. Factors that improve longevity: adherence to an individualized skincare regimen; sun avoidance and protection; healthy diet/exercise; good sleep hygiene; stress management; and following their surgery with suggestive adjunctive services to maintain results. - HypothyroidismThyroid problems (shown is actor Marty Feldman) can affect the eye in many ways and goes by a variety of terms that include: thyroid associated orbitopathy, thyroid associated ophthalmopathy, Graves disease, Hashimoto’s disease, and others. Women are affected more then men, but men tend to have a more serious form of the disease. Approximately 90% of the time, patients with thyroid “eye disease” will be hyperthyroid (too much thyroid hormone) but 5-10% have hypothyroidism or euthyroidism (normal thyroid levels). Hyperthyroidism is characterized by nervousness, weight loss, hair changes, warm intolerance, sweating, and irritability. Ocular manifestations can include double vision, red eyes, problems with eye closure (lagophthalmos), bulging of the eyes (proptosis), retraction of the eyelids, vision problems, and eye/orbital pain.

- ChemotherapyYes, but typically surgery is the best option for skin cancers. Radiation is one such option. Actinic keratosis can respond well to freezing methods, but this is not always successful and there can be undetectable skip areas. There are some newer topical chemotherapy options, but these are typically more prophylactic than for treatment. Lastly, there are some medications that can be very helpful for some patients with very extensive or with skin cancers at multiple areas around the eyelids or face. These can be prohibitively expensive and many insurances won't cover these medications since in most circumstances surgical removal is the proven "gold standard of care."

- Mohs SurgerySkin cancer removal on face and eyelids deals with very delicate skin and intricate systems of blood vessels and nerves. Dr. Burroughs uses various techniques to remove skin cancer in these areas based on the individual case. He will explain his surgical plan during the consultation. Dr. Burroughs for most skin cancers recommends Mohs surgery, and he collaborates with the best in southern Colorado. Mohs surgeons are fellowship trained dermatologic subspecialists that utilize techniques that have the highest success rates and the smallest surgical defects to remove the skin cancer. Dr. Burroughs is often referred eyelid cancer patients from Mohs surgeons because of his track record of providing excellent functional and cosmetic reconstructive outcomes.
- Reconstructive SurgeryAlternatively, a flat bony ridge above the eyes may need varying the above approaches. Similarly, the eye position to the cheek prominences is paramount when surgically addressing the lower eyelid for cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. An ideal youthful lower eyelid blends with the cheek convexity nearly as a continuum. As we age the lower eyelid appearance elongated vertically and fat bags herniate and hollows develop under the bags.
- BotoxBotox® injections are recommended for frown lines, a series of dynamic wrinkles that are formed by your facial expressions. Frown lines may appear as horizontal indentations across your forehead or vertical lines between your eyes. Botox® is also useful to treat crow’s feet, fine lines, lip lines, “frown face,” neck lines, and other areas. Botox was the first to market, and physicians (starting with ophthalmologists) used this botulinum neuromodulator to help patients with uncontrollable facial/eyelid spasms and other eye muscle problems to great success. In the 90’s its cosmetic benefits really took off, and neuromodulator wrinkle blocker injections are the number one performed procedures worldwide. Botox ®, by Allergan, is a fantastic botulinum with a long track record, but it is not the only excellent botulinum available anymore. It has become in many ways like the generic name of Kleenex for facial tissues or Xerox for copiers. Other excellent botulinum wrinkle blockers include Xeomin® and Dysport®. They largely have similar properties.
- Brow LiftConversely, if you lift your eyebrow with your finger, much of the excess upper eyelid skin resolves. Patients with substantial forehead wrinkles usually have brow ptosis, as they have been using their forehead muscles to compensate and lift the eyebrows higher. Some of this wrinkling will improve with a brow lift, but the most improvement will be achieved by lifting the forehead tissues as well. Forehead lifting surgery requires incisions in the hair-bearing areas of the scalp. There are also non-surgical methods including radiofrequency and suture lifting.

- Skin CareRecovery from a thread lift procedure is minimal. The improvement is immediate but keeps improving for several months. You are able to drive after the treatment. The most common symptoms are tenderness, minor swelling and slight reddening of the skin. You can rest at home for the day or return to your normal activities. Any discomfort is managed with non-prescription medications. There is some aftercare for a thread lift. You should not massage or rub the area when you are using skin care products or washing your face. Sleep with your head elevated and avoid positions that place pressure on the area. If bruising (typically low risk) develops you can receive complimentary intense pulse light treatments that dramatically speed bruise resolution. Prior to a thread lift the risk of bruising can be reduced by avoiding blood thinners prior to the procedure if medically safe to do so.
- MicrodermabrasionDr. Burroughs also has done chemical TCA peels for very severely sun-damaged skin on the back of the hands and lower arms.
