The Champaign Public Works Department maintained by the City of Champaign specializes in the repair and maintenance of roads, lighting, trees and plantations, and drainage and sewers. The department s sanitary sewer system consists of a network of pipes and manholes that is designed to carry wastewater from homes and other buildings to the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District s interceptor sewer system. Its forestry section is responsible for the planting, pruning and removal of trees on city rights-of-way and also conducting public information workshops to inform citizens of tree-related care, needs and issues. In partnership with the Village of Savoy, University of Illinois and City of Urbana the department conducts encephalitis control programs for citizens.
