The requirements for obtaining a plant patent are similar to those for obtaining a utility patent and the term of a plant patent is the same as that of a utility patent. The plant patent is available for asexually reproduced plants only.

In addition to her work in the legal field, she served as a legal technician in the Transactions Section of the Legal Department of Resolution Trust Corporation, a U.S. government-owned asset management company. Sherrie obtained her legal assistant certification from Rochester Community and Technical Institute, Rochester, Minnesota with continuing education at Dakota County Technical College, Rosemount, Minnesota, in business management. She has completed several CLE courses and has attended numerous seminars to gain additional knowledge of various aspects of the legal field.
