New Hanover County Detention Facility is operated by the Detention Division, which is administered by the New Hanover County Sheriff s Office. The facility houses more than 40,000 inmates. The Detention Division is responsible for the supervision of the inmate population within New Hanover County Detention Facility. It is also responsible for ensuring the safety, comfort and well-being of inmates. The division provides transportation, inmate classification, reception and warehouse services. In addition, New Hanover County Detention Facility offers GED and English as a Second Language programs to inmates. It provides volunteering and employment opportunities.
