- General Info
- American Red Cross Mount Baker Chapter The American Red Cross in Skagit Valley and Whatcom County began as individual chapters in 1917. Initiated by the first World War, the Chapters continued to serve the men, women, and children of our community by responding to current needs for emergency care. In World War I we provided surgery dressings, clothing, civilian relief, nursing care, and financial aid for those affected by the war. During the Great Depression, they helped feed families in need. In 1941, the Gray Ladies (Nurses\ u2019 Aid) Corp was developed when World War II was declared, with volunteers assisting in local hospitals, air raid shelters, clinics, and caring for the sick in their homes. These two chapters were merged into today's Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross in March, 2004
