- FramingWe recently completed a complex preservation project restoring a water powered mill in Freedom, Maine. This required assembling a team of specialists in many fields, from hydraulic engineering to heavy timber framing to historic roofing materials. The project had to meet stringent preservation requirements to qualify for the Maine Rehabilitation Tax Credit, and it had to satisfy the environmental concerns of dealing with a dam on a small river. Cold Mountain was charged with the overall coordination of the project as well as the reconstruction and repurposing of the buildings. The project ran smoothly and communication was always good, and the results have received a state preservation award. It was a privilege and pleasure to be part of that team effort.

- FencingA residential compound situated in a coastal village environment and consisting of three buildings – a guest house, a studio and a small barn. The structures are organized around a formal courtyard marked by apple trees and a granite watering trough with an adjacent cutting garden located between building faces and lattice fencing.
- SidingA set of buildings designed for a professor of Japanese culture and a painter. The house, studio and a detached dining pavilion are sited on the edge of an old orchard and a meadow sloping to the shore of the harbor. The house is positioned to take advantage of each of the views to the water and the meadow beyond. The roof forms, with their minimal pitches sloping in different directions, the weathered siding engaged by stucco panels on the exterior walls are evocative of traditional architecture in rural Japan.
- PorchesThe house features traditional millwork, architectural detailing, and craftsmanship throughout the interior and exterior of the building with generous porches and substantial interior spaces.
- Residential Roof RepairA house designed for a Washington D.C. based family and sited on a bold shore outboard of Rockport Harbor it was conceived as a vernacular form common to the area. The exterior materials, eastern white cedar shingles, steel roofing and stone veneer were selected for their durability on the exposed site. The interiors include an open floor plan and five bedrooms that will accommodate the entire extended family.

- CarpentryI found the carpentry crew members not only highly skilled craftsmen, but thoughtful, educated men working in a convivial, non-smoking environment without blaring music. Perhaps the most telling characteristic lies in the attitude of the foreman. It’s never an attitude of it can’t be done, but rather one of what we can do to make it happen. I knew I was in good hands and working with people who would do everything in their power to help me and my client achieve our vision.
