      Cafe Bernard is a cozy neighborhood cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner since 1990. With just eight tables--and a few more on the sidewalk during the warmer months--we hope you won't mind a short wait if we are busy. We use the highest quality ingredients and support our local farmers and food purveyors. Our menu reflects the French influence of owner Bernard Moffroid with buttery croissants and omelets in the mornings and a wide selection of flavorful meals served at dinner. The wine list is currently featuring the chateaux of Bordeaux along with many fine West Coast vintners.       Excellent food, outstanding concern for the diner's pleasure, a real value.

      The night we stumbled on Cafe Bernard was haunting. It was late (though the haunt was far from empty), but all of Basalt was bewitched: at midnight would be the release of the latest Harry Potter book, and costumed children flittered in and out like bats. Monsieur Bernard was not fazed. Over my protests, he took extra care to address certain unusual food sensitivities that I have, to the point of first avoiding all milk products, then hearing that it was only cow's milk, snatching my salad plate so as to garnish it with goat cheese. It's the closest thing to French small-town cooking you'll find within a thousand miles.
