A great classic Movie Theater built around 1929. The Strand Theater in Atmore hosted all the great films during the Golden Age of Hollywood including "Stagecoach", "Gone With The Wind", "The Wizard of Oz", "Wuthering Heights", "Rebecca", "Casablanca", "The Ten Commandments", "Some Like It Hot", "My Fair Lady", "The Graduate" and all the other great films released since its' initial opening around 1929 when "talkies" were beginning to be shown. The interior seated around 800 people, with ground floor seating and a Balcony. Circular stained glass lighting was used under the Balcony for the dimly lit lighting common to all Theaters. Westerns, serials, Newsreel features during World War II, Travelogue Features, Cartoons and all the great Hollywood films were shown in this Theater for the past 80+ years. This Theater closed in November 2014, making it the longest running, continuously operated Movie Theater in the State of Alabama. The Strand Theater is truly a cinema treasure.
