Formed in 1853, the Atlanta Police Department is a law enforcement agency that deters crime and promotes safety in the community. It provides various online crime statistics, maps and crime prevention tips, as well as crime reporting applications. The Atlanta Police Department has an operations bureau that consists of field inspection, support services, criminal investigations, field operations, and taxicabs and vehicles for hire divisions. The department operates a citizens academy that conducts classes to enhance relationships between police and community by providing insight into the workings of the police department. Located in Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department maintains the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, which specializes in hostage, barricaded gunman situations and bomb disposal.
