Founded in 1989, Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is a nonprofit charitable organization. The league operates the city-owned animal shelter and provides residents with animal control services. It is a welfare organization focused on providing community responsiveness, professional animal care, education, and compatible adoption services. The league has a humane educator division that offers visit to schools, scout troops and community organizations, covering topics, such as pet care, animal welfare, and preventing pet overpopulation. It also conducts animal awareness and education camps during the summer. Animal Welfare League of Alexandria provides counseling on training, nutrition, health care and pet nourishing. The league has a team of animal control officers that provide emergency services for sick and injured animals 24-hours, seven-days a week throughout the year. It is located in Alexandria, Va.
