- Founded in 1913, the American Cancer Society, also known as ACS, is a community-based, voluntary health care organization that offers cancer prevention programs. Headquartered in Atlanta, the organization operates more than 3,300 offices throughout the United States. It conducts behavioral and psychosocial cancer research to improve cancer control policies. The organization publishes several cancer awareness brochures, pamphlets, books and journals for patients, families and health care professionals. ACS also provides screening and treatment services for various types of cancers. It also offers emotional and practical support services for patients, families and caregivers. ACS provides various community-based programs, including Look Good...Feel Better, Hope Lodge and Man to Man. The organization also offers I Can Cope, which is an educational program that includes information, peer support and practical coping skills development services. The American Cancer Society maintains a location in Oakland, Calif.
