The Tuscaloosa Police Department provides law enforcement services, promotes public safety and protects the rights and property of residents in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The administration division is responsible for creating the policies and guidelines that govern the actions of the department. The criminal investigations unit deals with robberies, arsons, auto thefts and financial crimes.. The homicide and vice units are inter-agency units consisting of officers from the department, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff s Office, the University of Alabama police and the Northport police. The patrol division officers respond to all calls for service in the city limits and police jurisdictions. The traffic division is responsible for enforcing state and local traffic laws, responding to and reporting traffic accidents, providing escorts for funerals and special events and the school crossing guard program. Other department divisions include code enforcement, communications, housing, public affairs, records, training and various support units.
