If there’s one thing many homeowners would love for their home, it’s a hot tub. A nice relaxing soak in a hot tub is a great way to relax and wind down the day. The question prospective hot tubbers have is, what’s the best?

The best hot tub or spa (in this case, the two words are fairly interchangeable) is one meets your needs while being easy to clean and maintain. The first factor to consider is size – how many people does your spa need to seat? If you plan on having a lot of friends over for hot tubing regularly, you may want to look at a four- or even six-person spa. If it’s just for you and your family, a two- or six-person spa would probably be better.

Do you want your hot tub self-contained? A self-contained hot tub is just as it sounds, a single unit. The plumbing and heating equipment are all contained within the tub, which stands entirely above-ground, either directly on the yard or up on a deck. A non self-contained spa is installed either partially or completely in the ground, often as part of a swimming pool, with the plumbing and heating equipment separate from the actual tub. If you plan to install a pool and a spa at the same time, you might save money by going with a non self-contained tub. A self-contained hot tub, on the other hand, is easier to maintain, as the mechanics can be reached by taking off one of the side panels.

The final consideration is material – do you want a hardwood or acrylic hot tub? Hardwood is a classic and looks terrific, but it can also be more difficult to clean and maintain. An acrylic spa has a molded interior that is comfortable and easy to clean. The choice is yours, but if you want to go hardwood be sure to ask how easy it will be to access the mechanics for servicing.

A hot tub is a big investment, and so don’t settle for second-best. The best hot tub is a model that fits your needs and budget, and soon you’ll be relaxing in a warm, soothing pool.
