Sod is a turf or a thatch of grass that is held tightly together by roots beneath a square surface. Often sod squares are bound together on a large rolled rectangle that resembles a grass carpet. Better known as turf, sod is one of the more indispensable items that gardeners look to when seeking to create flawless grass.

What is Sod?

Most often, sod is grown locally and sold to consumers who seek to create a flawless lawn quickly. There are many varieties of grass used to make the turf, therefore creating a vast assortment of sod types to suit the needs and preference of a consumer. For example one of the most common types of sod is Kentucky Bluegrass because of its uniformly lush green color. However, many people prefer a mixture of sod types for its more natural appearance. Usually sod is harvested on a sod-specific farm for just under a year. During that time it is fertilized watered regularly and sculpted to perfection.

Most consumers see sod as a viable alternative to seeding a sparse lawn. For one thing, sod is already pre-made on a rolled turf. Another reason that consumers opt for a sod lawn is that there is no need to plant seeds that can easily be whisked away by animals such as birds, or squirrels. Additionally, with sod, a consumer would never be left wondering if the seeds took root. Usually sod is laid by rolling it out over the existing lawn just as one would roll out a carpet over an existing floor in their home. There are, however, a few quick guidelines to follow prior to the installation of the sod.

  1. Make sure that the area where you intend to put the sod clear. There cannot be any debris, or stones, leaves or branches.
  2. Wet the area where the sod will be installed. You are not supposed to install sod on dry, brittle ground.
  3. Install the sod strip seams tightly together. This aids in reducing dead dry areas on your lawn.
  4. Water your new sod lawn very well. Immediately after laying the sod lawn, you should water it and smooth it with a yard roller.

Sod lawns are extremely helpful for homeowners and landscapers to achieve the right look for their lawn projects. It is easy to manipulate, attractive to look at and can be tailored to suit your landscaping ideas and needs.
