Wedding Planning

A wedding planning timeline can help you get a handle on everything you need to get done for your wedding. Many things need to be taken care of up to a year before the wedding, and a wedding planning timeline can be the trick to making sure no important detail is forgotten.

Sample Wedding Planning Timeline

While each wedding planning timeline is different, depending on your wedding, this sample wedding planning timeline can give you a great starting point for making your own checklist.

One year Before the Wedding

  • Announce your engagement and arrange a meeting of the families
  • Pick a wedding date
  • Hire a wedding planner or wedding coordinator who can help you every step of the way
  • Set a budget and determine who is going to pay for what. It is no longer standard for bride's families to pay for everything, so make sure you are all on the same page
  • Pick a location for the ceremony and the wedding reception

Nine Months Before the Wedding

  • Begin shopping for your wedding gown and order your gown
  • Make your guest lists
  • Choose a caterer, florist and videographer
  • Invite friends to be members of the wedding party and begin shopping for bridesmaid dresses
  • Order wedding stationary and send save-the-date cards

Six Months Before the Wedding

  • Shop for and order a wedding cake
  • Hire wedding transportation for you and your guests
  • Book your hair stylist and makeup artists
  • Book your honeymoon
  • Plan your rehearsal dinner

Four Months Before the Wedding

  • Send out invitations
  • Order clothes for the groom and groomsmen
  • Finalize menus

Two Months Before the Wedding

  • Get your marriage license (most are only good for two months)
  • Do a sample hair and makeup day
  • Confirm details with florists

One month before the wedding

  • Contact guests who didn't RSVP
  • Plan your seating chart
  • Complete a final dress fitting
  • Buy gifts for the wedding party

One week before the wedding

  • Provide the location and caterer with a final head county
  • Get your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue
  • Pack for your honey moon

The day of the wedding

  • Have a wedding itinerary that details all of your wedding plans

You can add to the wedding planning timeline as needed in order to take care of any special details that you want for your wedding. Your wedding planner can also help you make, and stick to, a wedding planner timeline to make your day perfect.
