What Kinds of Waxing Services do Salons Provide?

Salons and Spas

Waxing services are a temporary yet effective way of removing unwanted hair on small or large areas of the body. Waxing removes hair from the root, so hair will not grow back for 2-8 weeks. Almost all areas of the body can be waxed. Examples of body areas include eyebrows, lip, chin, arms, legs, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini area, and the feet. Many salons provide various waxing services to tend to all of these parts of the body.

Types of Waxing Services Available in Salons

Generally, waxing is performed by spreading a layer of wax over the skin. A paper strip or cloth will then be pressed over it and then quickly ripped off against the direction of the hair growth. The strip removes the wax and, with it, the hair and some dead skin cells as well. This leaves the skin feeling and looking smooth. Typically, after waxing services, new hair growth is characterized as being soft and fine, not coarse and sharp like shaved hair. Regular waxing will also eventually reduce the growth of hair.

There are a few basic waxing services available in salons:

  • Generally, estheticians can use either a strip wax or hard wax. The strip wax method uses a thin layer of wax with a cloth strip placed over it. The cloth strip will then be pulled out to remove hair.
  • Hard wax, on the other hand, is also referred to as stripless wax. It does not need a strip because the wax is already applied in a thick layer. When set, the wax is just pulled out completely. Hard wax is ideal for sensitive areas such as the lip, underarms, and bikini area.
Other salons categorize their waxing services by temperature.
  • Warm wax is a type of honey wax that comes in a cream or honey consistency. While the wax is being heated, the skin is thoroughly cleansed and dried and you are given a dusting of talcum powder. When the wax heats up to the right temperature, it will then be applied on the skin using a spatula. Some salons will even use rollers to spread it. A paper or cloth strip will be used to set the wax and will then be pulled out.
  • As its name implies, hot waxing on the other hand uses wax at a higher temperature. Similar to hard wax, no strips are used. The wax is simply cooled to harden and then pulled away from the skin.
  • Cold waxing is also available in salons but not as popular as hot waxing. Cold waxing is usually for home use only. Cold wax is simply wax that is already applied on the cloth strips. Wax in the strips is already in semi-solid form and ready to use.

No matter what type of waxing services you decide on, be sure that they are performed by licensed estheticians or cosmetologists.
