Every lawn needs water, but watering a lawn with the wrong type of water or with the wrong type of watering techniques may actually harm or kill your grass. To make sure that you are watering your yard properly, keep these 5 points in mind.

Lawn Type

Different types of lawns have different types of watering needs. For example, colonial bentgrass needs an intense regular watering schedule while Buffalo grass thrives in a dry climate and may actually be harmed by too much water. To make sure that you are watering your lawn correctly, talk with a lawn care specialist about the type of lawn you own and the particular water requirements for your grass.

Watering Technique

A healthy grass root system is supported by the right type of watering technique. Avoid watering your lawn for frequent yet short intervals; the result will be ‘shallow’ lawn water soak that will eventually lead to weakened root systems. Your grass will benefit from less frequent deep watering schedules that will thoroughly soak the root beds and support strong root growth.

When to Water

The time of day which you water your lawn can have a big impact on your lawn’s health. Watering a lawn in the evening or late at night will help to conserve water, but it can lead to unhealthy fungal growth in the yard. Afternoon lawn watering is convenient, but a good amount of the water will eventually evaporate instead of being soaked up by the lawn. The best time to water a yard is early in the morning; an early morning watering schedule will help to conserve water, reduce fungal growth and it will give your lawn time to soak up the water before any evaporation may occur.

Water Conservation

Water conservation should always be kept in mind when watering a lawn; not only will your water bills be reduced, but in summer months you may have a limited amount of water to use on your lawn. To conserve water, always water early in the morning, only water when necessary and keep the watering system – sprinklers or hose – close to the ground to reduce evaporation.

Water Quality

If you are watering off a well system, it would be a good idea to have your water quality checked; watering your lawn with water that contains too much mineral content or which has an alkaline pH may change the water and moisture requirements for your lawn.
