More and more companies are offering VoIP services, enabling people to turn their high-speed computer systems into telephones. The technology is fairly new and is gaining popularity in the country. However, before shopping for VoIP services, it only makes sense to gain some understanding of the pros and cons association with VoIP services.

Benefits of VoIP Services

  • Cost. By relying on the Internet for phone service, the traditional billing format involving a phone company is thrown out the window. Cost per minute is no longer a concern in the world of voice over internet protocol. Instead, many providers include packages that allow unlimited phone calls - usually local, long-distance and overseas. In addition. All standard features such as caller ID, three-way conferencing and call forwarding, are free.
  • Convenience. Particularly for people who spend a lot of time working on the computer, the system couldn't be any simpler to actually use. There are three different ways to communicate, including a phone that plugs into your computer and the use of a headset, microphone and speakers on the computer.
  • Portability. No matter where you go, as long as you have a computer, someone can dial your number and reach you instantly anywhere in the world. Often, traveling creates an issue for phone calls and if you are overseas, people may not be inclined to call because of the cost issue with a traditional phone system. With VoIP services, your internet creates phone service that's identical to what you use when you are home.

Issues with VoIP Services

  • Power supply. Unlike the traditional home phone, you need a working power source in order to operate voice over internet protocol. In an emergency situation, when phone usage becomes particularly crucial, you would be unable to use VoIP.

  • 911 calls. Because of the technology involved with VoIP services, 911 service is often not included among VoIP services. The problem is that the VoIP location doesn't transmit a geographic address that 911 emergency services officials can interpret. Some VoIP companies are finding ways around the 911 situation. Perhaps the easiest way is to include a list of the full telephone numbers for police, fire and other emergency officials located closest to your home.
  • VoIP call quality. There are a number of reasons that VoIP call quality can sometimes be an issue. In the same way that your computer may infrequently lose its connection, or slow down to a crawl, issues can arise that affect the voice quality. The difference in connection speed between your computer and the person you are calling could have an effect on voice quality. VoIP providers say they are continuing to make strides to make VoIP services more reliable.
