Upper Back Pain and Chiropractic Treatment

Upper back pain is less common than pain in the lower back, but it can be just as difficult to bear. It can occur occasionally or constantly, and the discomfort can range from mildly annoying to excruciating. Upper back pain can make the simplest of tasks—such as sitting at your computer, or even sleeping—impossible. Fortunately, upper back pain is often easily treatable. A trained chiropractor can provide relief from your upper back pain, often after only one visit!

What Causes Upper Back Pain?

Your upper back (or thoracic spine) is that portion of your spine between your neck and your abdomen, roughly parallel to your chest. Your neck and lower back are flexible, allowing twisting, bending, and other movement. However, your upper back is there to provide stability. Since it has fewer moving parts, it's less susceptible to strain, or to degenerative conditions like bulging or herniated discs.

However, strain of the upper back does sometimes occur. Maintaining an unhealthy posture for an extended period of time or repetitively performing unhealthy activities and motions (such as improper lifting) can put strain on the thoracic spine and cause upper back pain. Occasionally, the joints that attach the ribs to the vertebrae can become stiff or immobilized, resulting in a joint dysfunction that causes upper back pain.

The cause of strain or joint dysfunction is usually stress of one kind or another. Physical stress, such as stooping over your desk for hours at a time, can be an obvious cause. Less evident is the mental or emotional stress that comes from worrying about finances or grieving over a loss. Mental/emotional stress can lead to tensed shoulders and shoulder blades, irritating nerves in the thoracic spine and causing upper back pain.

Chiropractic Treatment of Upper Back Pain

There are a number of treatment options available for upper back pain, ranging from pain medication to surgery. However, in many cases, chiropractic care has been proven to be a quick and long-lasting solution to upper back pain. Spinal adjustments, along with muscle stimulation and release (massage), can provide immediate relief, while rehabilitation stretches and exercises can offer a more long-term solution. Chiropractors can also relieve upper back pain by using ice or heat therapy to break the inflammation and reduce the swelling of the affected muscles.
