  1. If your HVAC is more than 10 years old it may be time to consider a new system. While units can work reliably for as long as 20 years, they lose their efficiency, especially when compared to newer equipment on the market. The older an HVAC, the more it will cost you to operate and maintain.
  2. Your HVAC system is no longer able to keep up with your heating and cooling needs. As HVAC units age, they become less efficient. Also if you’ve had an addition put on your home, the heating and cooling unit may not be large enough to handle the extra workload.
  3. Your HVAC system is makes a lot of noise. A noisy system could mean the unit is improperly sized to carry the heating and cooling load or there could be some other mechanical problem but overall an older unit will not run as quietly as a newer, more efficient model.
  4. You’re having ongoing problems with the air quality in your home. If you can’t seem to keep up with the dust it may simply mean that you need to change the filters on your HVAC system more often but it could also be due to a unit too small to handle the air exchange or it may also be signs of an aging system.
  5. Your heating and cooling expenses have increased. While the cost of heating and cooling is rising the increase on your bill might also be due in part to a less than efficient HVAC system. Learn how to read your utility bill and compare it to past bills. If the cost per unit of energy has remained the same but your bill is substantially higher you may want to look at your aging HVAC system.
  6. You’ve been paying out a lot in repair expenses. If your HVAC is costing you quite a bit for repairs it may be time to think about a new system. Why put money into an aging an inefficient system when you can invest that same money in a new unit? You’ll quickly realize a return on your investment with the money you’ll save on repairs and energy costs.
  7. You’re going to sell your home. If you’re planning on placing your house on the market and the HVAC system is outdated you may want to consider replacing it to make the home a more attractive sale. You’ll probably realize a substantial return on your investment.
  8. You’re planning a major home remodel. If you’re going to do some significant remodeling on your home that includes an addition, you could need to upgrade your HVAC as well. The old unit may be sized to meet the needs of your current square footage but might not be capable of handling the additional space.
  9. You have a gas furnace that uses a pilot light. Most new gas furnaces have an electronic ignition and if you ditch your old always-on pilot light for a more energy efficient model, you could realize a considerable savings on your utility bill in just a short time.
  10. It’s a matter of safety. If you have a gas furnace there is always the danger of carbon monoxide entering the home. Newer furnaces have built in features that greatly reduce this risk.
