Top 10 Things to Check on a Rental Car

Rental car companies work hard to maintain every vehicle in their fleets. From cleaning the interior and exterior to changing the oil, rental cars are probably given more attention than most privately owned vehicles. Even so, it's important to check certain aspects of a car before renting it.

  1. The car's fuel level should be checked and written down since many agencies require rented vehicles to be returned with the same amount of gasoline as when they left the lot.
  2. During summer months, the air conditioning should be tested by running it for several minutes to check for a cool enough temperature and strong air flow.
  3. During the winter, the heating system should be checked for adequate air flow and reasonable length of time for the car to "warm up."
  4. The car's defrosting capabilities should also be checked to ensure that they'll function properly when you need them.
  5. Though rental agencies ordinarily do a multi-point check on each vehicle when it is returned, it can be a good idea for a customer to check the fluid levels - oil, windshield washer fluid, brake fluid, etc. - to make sure they are all filled to appropriate levels.
  6. The exterior of the vehicle should be inspected for scratches, dents, and dings. These damages will be recorded as "pre-existing" and will not be charged to the renter upon return.
  7. The vehicle's interior should be checked for any damage, stains, or unpleasant odors. If the vehicle smells of cigarette smoke, for example, a customer may want to ask for a non-smoking rental. Pre-existing damages and stains will be recorded and not charged to the customer later.
  8. If the customer plans to use them, the radio, CD/cassette player, and/or DVD player should be operated at least briefly to make sure that they work properly.
  9. Seat belts should be checked for ease of use as well as any fraying or damage.
  10. If a car seat will be used, it's a good idea to attempt installing it using the vehicle's seat belt or LATCH system before selecting a rental car. If installation is particularly difficult, choosing a different car may be best.
