Time for College? Time to Think About the Future!

Deciding which colleges to apply to is a difficult, time consuming process, but making a good decision yields many rewards. A college education is incredibly important for two main reasons. First, it inspires personal intellectual and social growth that is invaluable in building a strong character and a readiness to face the “real world.” Second, a college education is a critical tool for finding employment.

The level of education that you receive largely determines what types of jobs will be open to you. A college degree will open doors and vastly expand your employment options. While there are always exceptions to the rule, it is a fact that the majority of high paying, professional careers in the United States are reserved for those with a college or university degree.

Thus, it's important to think about your future before you apply to colleges and universities. Take the time to envision your ideal future and then sit down and make a list of goals. Some of the things you should think about include what type of career you would like, what type of environment you'd like to live in (big city, rural area, etc.), and what type of balance you hope to strike between work and your personal life. Once you've done this exercise, it will be easier to narrow down your college and university choices. That's; because there are several distinct types of colleges and universities, and different schools are better for different people with different goals.

If you are not entirely sure what career you're interested in, or if you'd like to be competitive in today's job market, you'll probably want to focus your search on liberal arts colleges and universities. The majority of the nation's top private and public universities are liberal arts schools. Put simply, this means that these institutions offer advanced instruction in a wide variety of subjects in the sciences, arts, humanities and social sciences. At a liberal arts school, you can take time to figure out your career goals while getting a broad education.

If you're looking to enter into a specific field however, you may want to focus on colleges and universities that specialize in training for that field. Some examples include science and technical institutes, vocational training schools, schools for the visual and performing arts, nursing schools, and so on. If you do select a career-specific school however, just be sure that you've given a lot of prior thought to that field and are wholly committed to it.
