Temporary staffing agencies find workers to fill open positions for employers. Employers can hire workers on a daily or weekly basis and often enter into contractual arrangements with a temporary staffing agency. The temporary staffing company supplies a pool of workers on an hourly basis and adds a surcharge to that salary. The company pays the staffing agency and the salary is actually paid by the temporary staff agency to the worker. In 2008, there were about 2.3 million people hired for temporary jobs.

Jobs Offered by Temporary Staffing Agencies

Although some of the larger temporary staffing agencies that started out in the industry originally focused on office and clerical workers, there are many more jobs available today. They range from laborers to accountants and lawyers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the three most popular positions filed by temporary staffing agencies in 2008 were nurses, bookkeeping and accounting and customer services representatives.

Qualifications for Temporary Staffing Jobs

Many temporary staff jobs, ranging from assistants or laborers in the construction fields to assistants in plumbing, production and other fields, require no more than a high school diploma. In some cases, laborers with previous experience can earn temporary positions without a high school degree. However, employers generally expect the same credentials from workers temporarily filling positions as their own employees. That means CPA certification for accountants and degrees in business-related majors for managerial openings.

Job Prospects Offered by Temporary Staffing Agencies

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there should be a steady demand for temporary job placement in the 10-year period ending in 2018. In all, temporary jobs are expected to increase by 19 percent - significantly above the overall job growth of 11 percent expected through 2018. The current national shortage of nurses will play a significant role in temporary staffing, with many agencies contracting with hospitals to provide nursing and healthcare services. There also will be many new temporary jobs available in office and administrative support positions, as well as transportation and jobs involving moving or transporting materials, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Salary Prospects in Temporary Staffing Jobs

The average hourly salary for temporary workers in non-supervisory positions was $15 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, salaries varied for temporary positions, largely based on the education requirements for the position. For example, registered nurses average $30 an hour, while laborers averaged under $11 an hour.
