A swimming spa uses jets, propeller systems, or a paddle wheel to generate a current so you can swim without actually moving forward in the water (also known as “treadmill swimming”). A swimming spa is an economical and space-effective way to swim laps at home without constructing a full-sized pool. A swimming spa can also be used for walking, jogging or running in place, as well as aerobic exercise or hydrotherapy.

Swimming Spa Options

Swimming spa models are available in above-ground and in-ground varieties. Generally, a swimming spa is about 14 or 15 feet long, 5 or 6 feet wide, and anywhere from 3 to 6 feet deep. Most swimming spa models are constructed from acrylic, fiberglass, or vinyl liner over a stainless steel frame. A lot of models even include a special section at one end with seating, so you can use your swimming spa as a traditional hot tub.

The current of the swimming spa can be easily adjusted to accommodate swimmers of any speed. The temperature of the water is adjustable as well, so you can enjoy a swim in water that is soothing and warm, or brisk and cool. Some swimming spas come equipped with monitoring equipment so swimmers can keep track of their heart rate, pulse rate, and calories burned during their workout. Swimming spas can also be equipped with stereo systems that are audible underwater, so the swimmer can keep things fun during his or her cardiovascular workout.

Swimming Spa Advantages

One of the major advantages of the swimming spa is its compact size, which allows it to be installed in a small backyard, or even indoors. Unlike a swimming pool, there is no need to excavate your yard. You can easily assemble your swimming spa with common household tools. It’s even possible to install the plumbing yourself, although you may still want to hire a plumber if you don’t have any experience in that area.

A swimming spa requires much less maintenance than a swimming pool. You will still need to check the water regularly and add chemicals as needed, but a good filtration system and an ozone generator will help you keep your swimming spa clean, safe, and properly sanitized.
