SUV Rentals for Weekend Getaways

SUV rentals can take vacationers “where no one has gone before.” For suburban dwellers used to midsize or economy vehicles, renting an SUV for a weekend getaway provides numerous perks – at a price not much higher than the cost of renting a regular full-size car.

Imagine crossing country roads with your sweetheart in a cozy vehicle, knowing you could go off-road safely and easily with the push of one button. Imagine climbing mountains to reach the peak and relaxing, a spectacular view spread out before you. Imagine cruising on the tightly-packed sands of Florida beaches, even towing a small boat or jet skis behind you for an action-packed vacation experience. An SUV makes all this – and more – possible.

SUVs, or Sport Utility Vehicles, provide:

  • More cargo capacity to haul luggage, including suitcases, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and even camping gear
  • Off-road capabilities for the mountain or beach
  • Four-wheel drive for inclement weather
  • Towing capabilities

Many SUVs feature third-row fold-down seating to fit either seven adult passengers or tons of cargo, offering plenty of flexibility for a trip.

While SUVs perform well in off-road conditions, most rental SUVs offer all the amenities of a luxury class vehicle, including:

  • XFM radio/CD/iPod connection
  • Plasma screen and DVD
  • Optional GPS navigation system

Today’s newer SUVs, especially hybrid models, offer acceptable gas mileage, too. They are no longer the gas-guzzling monsters of the 1990s.

Driving SUV Rentals

People renting SUVs for a weekend getaway may not be accustomed to the unique handling of these vehicles. While driving an SUV, keep in mind:

  • Because they are heavier, SUVs take longer to stop than regular cars. Brake early.
  • SUVs may take longer to accelerate. To avoid burning excess fuel and revving the engine, give yourself more time to merge into traffic.
  • SUVs have a higher center of gravity than a regular car, making a rollover more likely.

To avoid a rollover, especially in bad weather, keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times. Keep wheel rotations at less than 1/3 of a turn. Sudden turns may cause an SUV to roll over; don’t swerve to avoid small animals in your path.

Be especially careful not to make sudden or extreme turns when driving in excess of 30 mph.

SUV rentals can be fun, convenient and comfortable for drivers who use caution on the road.
