Using a steam cleaner to deep clean your carpets is an effective way to maintain a healthy environment in your home. Whether you rent or buy, use your steam cleaner on your carpet annually.

When purchasing a steam cleaner, consider whether it will be for carpet only or if you would like to use it for furniture or car interiors as well. Other factors include the size of the water tank, the number of water tanks and the material that the tank is made of. For example, a steam cleaner with two large metal tanks means that there is a tank each for clean and dirty water. This allows the clean water to stay warmer longer, which means fewer refills while you are cleaning.

Most grocery stores and some hardware stores will carry a steam cleaner that you can rent. When renting a steam cleaner, also consider the type and amount of cleaning solution that you will require. If given the option, choose the steam cleaner that looks like it's in the best condition, and be sure to give yourself enough time to use and bring back. Checking out a steamer for a longer period will probably be less expensive than having to pay a late fee.

When using a steam cleaner, check to make sure your carpet doesn't have any special cleaning instructions that could restrict what kind of cleaning solutions that you use. While using the steam cleaner, take care not to over-saturate the carpet, which should only take 12 to 24 hours to dry. Anything longer can lead to mold and bacteria growth.

Other Considerations

  • Use a steam cleaner annually to deep clean your home. This shouldn't be confused with spot treatment of stains, which should occur as soon a possible after the spill.

  • Most spills can be treated by blotting the area with a mild mixture of dish soap and water. For more severe stains, vinegar can be used.
