Definition

DSL is a digital subscriber line, which is a type of high speed internet connection. DSL service transmits digital data over regular copper telephone lines. Internet access and telephone services can be used at the same time.

With standalone DSL, the DSL signal still travels on the regular copper phone lines, but customers choose not to have access to the telephone services. It’s called standalone DSL, naked DSL or dry loop DSL, but it’s all the same thing. Standalone DSL allows customers to get high speed internet service without getting phone service.

Bundles versus Standalone DSL

Initially, standalone DSL was first offered in late 2005. The US government initially forced the offering of this product as a condition to allow the merger of two major telecom companies. Other telecom companies began to offer standalone DSL as well, although it often isn’t promoted as much other products. Some telecom companies offer special promotions or discounts for new standalone DSL customers, to get them to switch from cable modem or dial up.

Major telecommunications companies offer services in bundle packages. Usually these packages offer a combination of landline phone, television, wireless phone and internet access services. Although many customers buy these bundles, other consumers prefer to buy only the services they use regularly, namely DSL. For customers on a budget, standalone DSL may be a more attractive option.

Influenced by VoIP Phone

Many consumers use their DSL line to power their VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone service. VoIP phone service routes voice calls over the Internet; it uses DSL or other broadband internet service to transmit the data instead of a regular telephone landline.

Many consumers don’t use a regular landline for their homes. They find that the rates for phone calls on traditional landlines are too high, especially for international calls. Also, many calling features that cost extra from traditional phone companies are included as standard features with VoIP providers.

Prices

Prices for standalone DSL vary, usually starting from $29.99 and up. Some telecom companies offer standalone DSL, but the price difference between standalone DSL and DSL with phone service may be minimal. Some companies charge more for standalone DSL, to make up for the loss of revenue from the landline telephone charges. It’s worth comparing fine print, including all monthly fees, deposits, service agreements, equipment costs, early termination fees and features from various telecom providers before choosing a standalone DSL provider.
