Shade loving flowering plants can add a little color and flair to shade landscape designs. Flowers that thrive in the shade will also help to improve the health of lawn soil under shady areas by reducing soil erosion and the accumulation of standing water.

  1. Begonia – with over 100 varieties, you can be sure to find a begonia that will fit the climate of your yard. Shade loving annual begonia flowers produce beautiful blooms of different sizes, shapes and colors and they have rich green large leaves that provide a protective ground cover.
  2. Bellflowers – this aptly named perennial flowering plant blooms with gorgeous delicate bell shaped flowers in light blue to subtle lavender colors. Bellflowers will pop back up even after harsh winters and they provide a lively ground cover for shady areas.
  3. Coral Bells – perennial coral bells produce a profusion of showing stalks that are covered in a thick blanket of tiny pink and white flowers. Different hybrid varieties of the coral bell can thrive in extreme climates, and gardeners will need to choose the right coral bell variety to suit their lawn.
  4. Dropwort – technically a perennial herb, the shade loving dropwort blooms with delicate yet stunning white flowers in dry soils under partial shade conditions.
  5. Impatiens – available in hundreds of varieties from annuals to perennials, impatiens produce small yet eye catching flowers of dark reds and deep purples. Impatiens may grow to great heights and they flourish in moist and rich soils.
  6. Lamb’s Ears – easy to grow in cool climates, and difficult to control in warmer climates, the perennial lamb’s ears are a low growing flowering plant that blossom with small pink flowers on soft and fuzzy sage colored leaves.
  7. Lily of the Valley – out of all the shade loving flowers, lily of the valley is immediately recognizable for its delicate drop-bell flowers. Lily of the valley flourishes in cool shady areas, it provides a protective ground cover and its lovely blooms emit a sweet scent.
  8. Pansy – the happy little annual pansy will flower with richly colored blooms that beg to be seen. While the pansy requires a little more care than most plants, it will reward your attentions with eye catching blooms.
  9. Primrose – the perennial primrose have light green leaves with a flowering shoot that comes in a range of colors. The primrose prefers partial shade, rich soil and moderate moisture.
  10. Purple Violets – in moist and shady areas, these shade loving flowers will produce delicate purple blooms and a secure ground cover for soil; purple violets enjoy moist soils and cool climates.
