Pros and Cons of a Senior Apartment
For many elderly individuals, the option of moving into a senior apartment complex may be ideal. Certainly, there are many advantages to living in one of these places. However, there are a few downsides that may need to be considered before making the big move. Weigh the pros and cons of a senior apartment to determine if it's the right move for you.
Benefits of a Senior Apartment
One of the big benefits of senior apartments is the ability to live close to other seniors. This provides the opportunity to connect with new friends by taking part in community activities. Many complexes put together frequent events that allow renters to mingle and get to know each other. Access to pools, spas, fitness centers and other on-site facilities is another big advantage of such complexes.
Compared to a house, a senior apartment typically requires less maintenance and lower monthly payments. Selling your home to move to an apartment also frees up equity that can be used to travel, enjoy life or spend on grandchildren. Finally, senior apartments are often within close proximity to hospitals and other health facilities.
Downsides of a Senior Apartment
One of the major potential downsides of moving into a senior apartment center is the need to move out of a house that has been your home for decades. Certainly, it may be difficult to move out of the home that your children grew up in. Additionally, a move to an apartment may require you to get rid of furniture and other belongings that simply won't fit in a smaller apartment. If you don't like the idea of being cooped up in a smaller home, then it may be best to stay where you are.
It is also important to consider the differences between apartment living and senior living centers. A senior apartment typically offers no on-site health services. For those who need frequent medical or living assistance, a senior living center may prove to be the best option.
Selecting a Senior Apartment
Hopefully, there are several senior complexes in your area from which to choose. Before moving in, consider reviewing requirements for residency, as well as on-site amenities, pricing and proximity to places you visit frequently. You may also want to look into parking availability, level of security, conditions of the lease, availability of rent control and other pertinent factors before selecting a senior apartment.
